A shift is a womens base layer, made of soft linen or wool. It was worn directly against the body, and therefore was washed and changed frequently. It would be the item of clothing most abundant and frequently replaced in a wardrobe. This shift is made in a late 18th century style, though similar garments continued to be worn into the 20th century. By wearing an underlayer such as this one, it protected the outer layers from being dirtied by sweat or grime, allowing them to be washed less frequently. Washing clothing was not only a laborious task that needed to be done by hand, but it also decreased the lifespan of the garment. When your clothing lasts longer and is valued higher, there is no need for extensive wardrobes, even among the upper classes.
