Bicycle skirt, constructed in a late 19th-early 20th century style

In a bicycle skirt (also called a split skirt), the label ‘skirt’ is a bit of a misnomer. The garment is made of two wide legs, like a pair of trousers. However, there is pleating in the back, and a panel of fabric in the front which can button the two legs together. This gives the appearance of a skirt with the practicality of pants. As the name would suggest, this garment was created after the advent of the bicycle, and gave women the ability to ride while still appearing socially acceptable. Practicality and aesthetic were carefully balanced in this garment.
